Terror at My Old College

Posted by Karen - September 14th, 2006

A gunman went in and started shooting randomly at my old college, Dawson College in Montreal. 19 people were injured and 2 people were killed. How terrible to see this happen! I am in shock that this type of thing happened again in Montreal.

Anyway, the full story is here:

Sheesh. What is it with the World these days? I didn’t know things like this happened in Canada. From what I’ve heard, Canada is normally a pretty peaceful place.

yes, Canada is normally pretty peaceful…but this has happened 3 times now in Montreal since 1989. I left Montreal in 1975 just after the Separatists came into power.

I’m really very glad that I live in a smaller city now. Welland has around 50,000 people and some crime but nothing compared to what happens in bigger cities around the world.

We’ve had something like that in Holland too a few years ago. A teenage kid shot a teacher dead over something he didn’t agree with. He did turn himself in a few days later.
And in Germany, last year or the year before, some guy also lost his head on a school and shooted around. I can’t remember what happened to the shooter but I think a few students were killed then.

I think there is way too much violence on tv, and games for children can also be pretty nasty.
Our national and local authorities are doing a lot on respect, integration, security and that helps. But there is still a lot to win on creating peaceful and sensible societies.

yes, Frits. Kids have become quite insensitive to violence, thanks to TV and video games. As a parent to a teenage son, I have had to teach him that peaceful resolutions to conflicts is the way to handle things. In his highschool anyone who participates in a fight will automatically be charged with assault. That’s a good step to stopping violence, I hope.
