Teach Yourself Anything You Want

January 21st, 2009

Hello, everyone!

I trust we have all survived the inauguration celebrations? What a glorious day it was yesterday, for the US and for the world.

Never ever doubt what you are capable of becoming.

In 1996 I quit a very cushy, easy, probably over-paid clerical job with the Canadian government. Many of my friends and acquaintances thought I was nuts because I was a single mom. To them, job security should have been my most important consideration.

The thing is, job security at that time didn’t exist. Just like it doesn’t exist now! In fact, when I left my civil service job, someone who’s position was about to be terminated, got my job. And I got her severance package based on my wages and service.

So I saved someone else from unemployment while I took the risk, stayed home to raise my son on my terms, bought myself a computer, and immersed myself in study. When I logged onto the Internet for the very first time, I knew I was home!

I befriended a group of amazing women – painters, graphic artists, poets, musicians, all of whom were sharing their wonderful talents freely. One of the women in that group helped me out. She told me that I didn’t need to own the fancy software such as PhotoShop, Dreamweaver, etc., to design websites.

She told me I could use Notepad and view my work in my browser. I could also get free HTML editors, some of which are amazing. She sent me links to sites with free and low-cost graphics editors. She showed me how to search for whatever I needed and she taught me some basic netiquette.

The rest of it I taught myself. I learned by researching, joining communities, reading and watching what others do and than replicating it.Yes, I taught myself HTML, XHTML, CSS, enough PHP to create WordPress themes and alter exisiting PHP code in other scripts, as well as bits of other languages that I can figure out easily enough. I am confident in my ability to install and customize most CMS, forum software, etc.

And I have been paid for my ability to do these things and to teach others how to do them.

What I’m trying to get across here to all of you who are struggling is this: don’t let your personal circumstances stop you from achieving anything you want. Because if you want it bad enough, you can achieve anything!

You can teach yourself how to do anything because there is an abundance of free and low cost information online. Whatever you need to know is here, at your fingertips. If you are honest, and you are determined and willing to work, the right people will want to help you and you can and will succeed.

Yes you can!

If you have an inspiring story to share of you or someone you know over-coming challenges successfully, please feel free to post your comments.
