Winter Blast Hits Niagara - We’re Snowed In!

Posted by Karen - March 8th, 2008

By the time this snow storm leaves the region sometime tonight, we will have had 40-50 centimetres of snow dumped upon us. With the high winds and mixed precipitation, since the snow turned to freezing rain and then back to snow again, driving conditions are quite treacherous.

Our driveway was partially covered by 3-foot snowdrifts so it took us quite some time to clear it up this afternoon. The whole time we were plowing or shovelling, freezing rain was pouring down, turning the whole thing into an icy, wet mess.

Many who had made travel plans for the March break are finding themselves scrambling to make alternate arrangements. Some flights leaving Toronto’s airport terminals are either cancelled or delayed and travellers are being advised to call their travel agents or the the airlines for flight information.

I wish I was on a safe flight to a warmer destination. I’m daydreaming about sipping a nice tropical drink on a warm beach right about now. I think this winter caught everyone off guard, including me. We’ve haven’t seen this much snow in Ontario since 1935!

Since I grew up in a suburb of Montreal, winters like this one were the norm when I was a kid. I remember the snow was so deep sometimes that if you took one step, you would lose a boot. How come it was so funny back then and it isn’t now? Where’s our sense of humor gone when we can let bad weather affect our mood so much? Is being snowed in really that bad?
