Site Re-Design Complete

Posted by Karen - May 9th, 2006

I’ve finally completed the re-design of this site. Thanks to John Godley’s WordPress Theme Guide, I was able to put together my own theme using the clear instructions. What I did was combine some of the elements like the sidebar from Giraffe2 theme with my own style and design. Combining the stylesheets into one and making it all work through a heavily-modified default theme, made it all come together. I probably could still do some more CSS optimizing and I imagine I’ll be tweaking and fine-tuning as I go.

So now the challenge is to fill this blog with some quality content. Stay tuned!

    Hey Karen!

If I had checked your fees before I started playing around with open source templates, I would have hired you and will refer people when the need arises. You’re more than reasonable.

I also love your fractal art. Could we use them or are they copyrighted?

Your site is evidently doing what you intended. You sold me!

Thanks for visiting and your kind comments, Cathy.
I know my rates are reasonable. I know what it is like to run a small business or a one-man-show, so my fees are designed to give the individual or small business owner a much-needed break.

The fractal images are copyrighted…that’s what I still need to do is create a copyright page and a privacy policy, too. I’ll do it first thing tomorrow.

Hi Karen. Great job on the theme. You’ll be tweaking it all the time I’m sure. Not because it doesn’t already look and work good but because you’ll want to fine tune things. I know that’s been the case with my site. Keep up the good work!

Nice redesign, Karen! For some reason I can’t log in at OWD, so I thought I’d leave a comment here.

I think I might be inspired to redo my own WP theme :)

I like your new site. It’s clean and friendly. I have one or two suggestions however.

First, I’d prefer if you had only one level of pages deisplayed in the navigation. I think it could be better to show the sub-pages only when you are on one of them or on the parent page.

Also, the RSS feeds icons in the footer are confusing because you need to hover them to see which one is for for posts and which for comments.

Otherwise, I like the way you have styled the google advertisments. They’re inobtrusive, thus more friendly looking than on most sites.

    Good design!

thanks DimP, Jan, and seanrox for your terrific input…

DimP, you read my mind…I too would like the sub-pages hidden so that will be one part of the tweaking I will definitely do. I’ll have to figure that one out…Yeah, maybe I’ll just do text links for the feeds. Good advice, thanks!
    :)

I think I’ve already done something like this for sub-pages in WordPress but I can’t remember the exact code I don’t have time to search for it right now.

As for the feeds, I forgot to mention that you can have both icons and text (orange attracts more attention than grey text). Why don’t you just insert those icons as background images?

I found a Wordpress plugin called Fold Page List
    located at:

that did the trick for the sub-pages…

as for the feeds…DimP, you make a good point…
