Those who know me really well, know me as a huge Tolkien fan and lover of Middle Earth lore. In the Lord of the Rings, there are a few female characters who stand out. In the books, Tolkien downplayed Arwen’s role in the story of the War of the Rings. In the movies, Peter Jackson gave Arwen a bigger role and I think choosing Liv Tyler to play her was perfect.

In this video clip we see Arwen, torn between her desire to be with the man she loves, and giving up her immortality. She makes the sacrifice, despite her father’s wish to see her pass Over Sea with him, and Aragorn’s suggestion she recant her choice and go to the Havens. Arwen acknowledges that this is futile:

“Nay, dear lord, she said, that choice is long over. There is now no ship that would bear me hence…”
